Interview with Photographer Diana Debord

Today we are travelling to Italy to meet Diana who is a 26 year old photographer and web/graphic designer living in Novara, Italy. She has a shop at Etsy – Debored.
Diana, Can you tell us a little about yourself and your work?

I’m a visual artist and photographer, I take mostly self-potraits and portraits, both with digital and film cameras.

Many people have described my photography as a mix of Alice in Wonderland and Amélie, for its decadent romanticism and dreamlike atmosphere.

What are you working on at the moment?
I’m working on my first book, and I’m really excited about that! It’s going to be a journey among oniric visions, poems and of course photographs. I’m working on the 2012 calendar of ENPA, an Italian animal rights organization and I’m also preparing another solo exhibition in my hometown.

What is your favorite piece of work, that you have created?

My favourite work changes almost every day: I tend to be hypercritical of my creations, and I must say I’m not easily satisfied by the result. But at the moment I think my favourite one is “Whale in a cage” which you can see below. This piece will be exhibited in a group exhibition in Milan in September.

What are your goals for the future, both work wise and life?
I’d like to work more, developing my skills as a photographer and my creativity. I would like to exhibit in Great Britain, which is a country I really like: most of my favourite artists are British, so an exhibition there would mean a dream coming true to me.

What would people be surprised to learn about you?
I’m obsessed with the Manic Street Preachers, they’re my favourite band since 1998 and I also run their only Italian fans community. I travelled from Italy to England just to see them!

Where do you sell your work?
I use Etsy to sell my prints in various formats and I accept custom requests on most of my works. All the items come signed on the back and I often include a free postcard :)

Where else can we find you online?
I have a website featuring my portfolio, blog and biography. I also have a Facebook page which is frequently updated.

Do you have any tips or inspiring words for others?
I believe that if you do art, you are an artist. This means you have to follow your inner world and your dreams, never think about what people may expect from you. It’s important to learn as much as possible so you can express your ideas using different means.

What is your favorite…
Color? Teal and purple – Animal? Cat – Season? Autumn
Movie? The Machinist — Book? Anything by Edgar Allan Poe

Thanks for letting us see some of your work and get to know you a little bit, Diana. I love the Whale in a Cage photo and am sure you’ll do well with it in the Milan exhibition… Let us know how you get on… I’m sure I’m not the only one who would love to see some photos of the exhibtion, and of course Milan!
